| Wallis claimed he took up painting ‘for company’. | ||
| Wallis painted with the materials he had to hand: using ships’ paints on old cardboard boxes and scraps of driftwood. | ||
| English naive painter who lived in St Ives in Cornwall. Wallis first went to sea aged nine and was a seaman, fisherman and scrap merchant. He only took up painting after his wife died, when he was 70. He painted his vigorous scenes of the sea and shipping from memory and, in 1928, was ‘discovered’ and championed by the English avant-garde artists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood who collected his works. |
