Alfred Wallis' Grave - Barnoon Cemetry, St.Ives. Alfred Wallis’s tomb is different from all others in St Ives. A tiny man climbs through the door of a tall white lighthouse. The tomb decoration was made by Bernard Leach, the potter, the sandy yellows and earthy reds are the potter’s equivalent of Wallis’ more virulent colours. However Wallis often painted his seas with earth colours, white and black, which may have had a connection with the colour of his boats. The colour of the sea capturing what lay beneath it, sand or rock or the living forms of the fish. |

He is buried in Barnoon cemetery, overlooking St. Ives' Porthmeor beach and the Tate St Ives gallery. An elaborate gravestone, depicting a tiny mariner at the foot of a huge lighthouse – a popular motif in Wallis' paintings. |
