Sennen & Sennen Cove No one disputes that West Cornwall has the most spectacular scenery. Some argue that the further west you travel, the more spectacular it becomes. Sennen Cove would tend to support that claim. There is always some sort of breathtaking natural scenery, from giant waves crashing over the breakwater to the joyous sight of dolphins and seals swimming just offshore and the variety of different seabirds that nest on the cliffs, or just the simple marvel of a spectacular sunset.Sennen Cove lies about a mile from Land’s End in the south-east corner of Whitesand Bay, sheltered from the prevailing Atlantic westerlies by the imposing bulk of the mighty Pedn-men-du Cliff. The Cove was originally established as a fishing station, and at the end of the nineteenth century, many local men and women were employed in the pilchard fishery, but tourism is now the main trade of the Cove, although a small commercial fishing fleet remains. Sennen’s main beach, awarded a prestigious EEC ‘Blue Flag’ for the quality of its water and environment, along with the neighbouring Gwenver Beach to the north, are recognized as two of the most famous body-boarding venues in all of Europe. Noted for their translucent, turquoise water, golden sands and exhilarating surf, both are equally welcoming to the general bather, particularly families. In addition to the mile wide golden sands, low tide reveals plenty of rock pools just waiting to be explored. In Sennen Village itself, with its traditional granite church, houses rising up the hillside and its famous First and Last Inn, you will find a delightful selection of charming shops and restaurants. And starting from the Cove, there are two distinct and spectacular walks. The first is a cliff-top walk to Land’s End, part of the South West Coastal Path which takes you past the ancient Maen Castle which dates back to 300 BC. The second walk goes in the other direction and takes you along and behind the town but following close to the shore line, completing the curve of Whitesand Bay and dropping down towards the beach. Equally spectacular and just as rewarding. |
