St. Ives
St Ives is certainly one of the best known towns in Cornwall and it certainly seems to have something for everyone. Long popular as a holiday destination, it offers an idyllic combination of golden sands on its award-winning beaches, a truly beautiful bay and a picturesque setting beyond the harbour of narrow cobbled lanes and invariably flower festooned courtyards.
Artists have made the town home since the 19th century, drawn by the brilliant light and luminous colours, and the opening of the St Ives Tate Modern has expanded the artistic community further.
But St Ives offers so much more. Although fishing no longer dominates the local economy the way it once did, boats still fill the harbour and the spirit of this historic town is evident everywhere.
And for beach lovers, there is the choice of three outstanding beaches: Porthmeor, the biggest, which is always popular with surfers; Porthgwidden, a small, pretty, family beach; and Porthminster, a larger family beach with excellent swimming.
Add to all that a range of excellent cafes and restaurants that cater to all tastes, entertainment for all ages, a range of traditional pubs and a lively, friendly welcoming atmosphere and its no wonder that St Ives has become so popular.
